Wim Janssen, head of drama at VRT: ‘When Panenka knocked on VRT’s door with the idea of This is not a murder mystery, we were immediately enthusiastic. Making our cultural heritage, surrealism, accessible to a wide audience by means of an exciting and compelling whodunit immediately struck us as a good approach. We have long been known internationally for our innovative fiction, thinking out of the box and mixing genres. This is not a murder mystery fits in perfectly with that. Thanks to the New8 collaboration, we can also immediately play off our Flemish talent and creativity internationally and there is immediately a huge viewer potential.’
Kato Maes, Executive Producer Panenka: ‘With This is not a murder mystery, Panenka has made a Belgian icon the main character of an international whodunit. Bringing the world of 1936 to life with top actors from home and abroad both in front of and behind the screen was not only an honour but also a great pleasure. We are extra grateful that we were able to realize this ambitious project through a unique collaboration with 10 European broadcasters, which together reach an audience of 135 million viewers, and with STUDIOCANAL, to reach even wider worldwide audiences.'
Hans Herbots, director: ‘René Magritte, the surrealists, 1936, a strong Flemish and international cast and an exciting story - what more could you want as a director? This series brings together a lot of what I have already done: the suspense, the emotions, the satirical undertone and a lot of visual flair. All elements that make This is not a murder mystery a very special series. A series that I am excited to unleash on viewers next year!’
